TUCSON WOMAN'S CLUB
RAISES $6,500 FOR SCHOLARSHIPS
The TWC Clubhouse, 6245 E. Bellevue was the site for the annual scholarship luncheon on Monday May 7, 2012. The club women award six scholarships each year as well as a contribution to the Hugh O'Brien Youth Leadership Program.
With a membership of about one hundred, the organization raised $6,500 this year to gift to worthy applicants. Scholarships, the recipient and educational institutions are as follows.
The Ruth L. Green which is awarded to a U.A third, fourth year or graduate student went to Alexandra Freedman who is a Teach Arizona M. Ed. Candidate.
The Shirley Basel U.A. Nursing Scholarship went to Yvette Lucca.
Emily Spirk, The Mezzo-Soprano winner of the Dore Teter-Helen Lott U.A. Music Award performed brilliantly with her accompanist Brent Burmeister to an awed audience. The sharing of her gifted talent thrilled all who were present and was considered the highlight of the luncheon. Checks in the amount of $1,000 for each of the above are being sent to the University and will be available to the recipients at fall registration.
There is also an award presented to a high school senior girl who has been accepted by the UA for the following year. The TUSD High School to participate each year is determined by alphabetical rotation of school name. This year's recipient is Safio Mohamed from Catalina Magnet High School. Her $1,000 award will also be available to her at registration in the fall.
Pima Community College was awarded two scholarships this year and went to Susan Hansen with a Chiropractic goal and Melinda Ferrell in Dental Hygiene.
Alma L. Ubeta, Development Manager of the Pima College Foundation was present to accept the $2,000.
The Hugh O'Brien Youth Leadership program received a contribution of $500. A HOBY board member Nancy Heiser and her daughter Sarah, a 2011 alumna of the program spoke at the general meeting preceding the luncheon and answered questions. Sarah proved to be an outstanding ambassador for this wonderful youth leadership training opportunity.
